STIE IEU Honors Indonesia’s Cultural Heritage on National Batik Day May 11, 2026

Exactly on October 2, 2009, UNESCO had officially inscribed batik on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the Oral Traditions & Expressions clause of the Indonesian. With continuous advance of the fashion, batik is no longer reserved only for the older generation.

Nowadays, the millennial generation begin to view batik as a signature accent of everyday apparels instead of a mere dress code in wedding receptions or other formal events. Various parties, from office workers, entrepreneurs, and even students, have grown accustomed to batik clothes. Batik eventually becomes one of the archipelago fabrics to be proud of. Ten years later, on October 2nd 2019, all lecturers and staff of STIE IEU Surabaya wore their best batik clothes to office, in commemoration of Batik Day.

According to Dr. Suharto, MM, the Director of Postgraduate Program in STIE IEU Surabaya, batik commands a great respect as the world cultural heritage. He also added that the name batik was coined from the terms ‘ngembat’ and ‘dot.’ These two words mean ‘melontarkan titik” (loosely translates into “throwing dots/points”).
